Meet the Trustees: Marie Harrison

Marie is a senior leader with a background in digital transformation, governance and change. She recently joined the EMED Foundation Board and is already bringing insight, energy and a clear belief in the power of community. We caught up with her to find out what drew her to the role.

What’s your favourite part of being a trustee?
I am a very new trustee, and I am looking forward to contributing and doing what I can to support this great charity.

How would you describe the Foundation in three words?
Backbone for the community.

Which of our funding streams do you feel most passionate about?
I can’t pick one, as I think all are important.

What’s one thing you’ve learned since joining the Board?
Every member is truly committed to supporting the charity and absolutely believes in its purpose.

What kind of impact do you think the Foundation will have?
I think it will be a lifeline for people that need it. The Foundation will fill gaps that other organisations or agencies just don’t have the resources to help with.

If you could instantly fund any project tomorrow, what would it be?
Something social. Something that connects different age groups of people together in the right way. I think it’s fundamental to keep people connected. We can all learn and support each other a lot that way.

What advice would you give someone thinking about applying for a grant?
Do it! Grants will be assessed and awarded, but you don’t know until you try.

Why do you think support for hardship or volunteering matters?
Everyone needs support at some point. Hardship isn’t planned, it happens. Day to day life is complex for most people but in different ways. Volunteering is core to creating social value, and by giving just a little, some time can create fantastic things.

What motivates you outside of work?
I guess you can sum it up by learning new things, helping people and building memories.

What do you do when you’re not wearing your trustee hat?
I have a demanding job. I’m very family orientated, so looking after them and our pets. Learning new things is a must so I don’t get bored! Going to concerts and theatre.

What’s a fun fact about you most people don’t know?
I took helicopter flying lessons, as I was advised it would solve my fear of heights. It didn’t!

Do you have a favourite book, film or podcast that inspires you?
This is a difficult question, as there are so many. I guess I find anything that empowers women in communities or workplaces the most inspiring.

Finish this sentence: “The EMED Foundation is…”
Enabling people and communities to be better.
